United Kingdom
London is home to Europe’s largest regional workforce and competes with New York as the financial capital of the world. Many banking and insurance institutions are headquartered there and similarly the legal and Business Services sector has a strong presence.
Nationally, the Not for Profit and Public Sector makes up a quarter of the recruitment market and this sector has remained fairly consistent throughout the downturn. There have since been a number of reputable recruitment businesses launching new divisions to work within this area.
London is an established yet competitive market with a number of firms operating in any one sector to meet the demand from clients. The five global search firms all have offices based there who work at the top end of the market and there are a number of smaller specialist executive search firms who are competing alongside at this level.
Regionally the recruitment market differs somewhat and allows consultants the opportunity to work across many more disciplines and sectors than potentially that of London.
As a whole, the UK was hugely affected by the global economic crisis and it is fair to say that the recruitment sector is still continuing to recover. However we have seen some positive developments and firms are hiring much more so than in 2009 when there was a sharp decline in the demand for recruitment services.
It is still a challenging climate but consultants who are able to add value to their client’s recruitment processes with specialist industry knowledge are able to form long term partnerships for the future.
